SUDS will be performing Ian Gledhill's adaptation of Bell In Campo by Margaret Cavendish at Bolsover Castle on Sunday 1st July at 3 pm. Ian is directing the production and has abridged and adapted the play so that it runs for about 45 minutes. The performance forms the final event in the Margaret Cavendish Society International Conference which this year is being hosted by Sheffield University. As a result the audience will be coming from as far afield as America, the Far East and New Zealand.
The play was originally written some 350 years ago. On the one hand an exploration of love and loyalty, its broad humour and feminist themes make it a remarkable play for its time but one that is very accessible to modern audiences. As far as we are aware, the play has never previously been performed in public, making this something of a landmark production.
The cast comprises John Skevington, Mick Connell, Jonathan Jones, Peter Geary, Steven Carter, Lynda Liddament, Linda Kirk, Catherine Carter, Erica Packington, Naomi Deaville and Julia Bisby.
Bolsover Castle occupies a dramatic position high above the town of Bolsover near Chesterfield. The play will be performed in the Fountain Garden, the scene of the first ever performance of one of Ben Jonson's works in 1634. (If it rains the performance will take place indoors). Admission to the performance is free, admission to the Castle is £6.80 for adults, £3.40 children, £5.10 concessions, £17 family ticket. Admission is free to English Heritage members. The Castle is open from 10am - 6pm on Sundays and makes a wonderful day out. The comedy in Bell In Campo will appeal to the whole family too, so why not bring a picnic, weather permitting, and be part of a very special occasion.
