She Stoops to Conquer

by Oliver Goldsmith

Wednesday 11th April to Saturday 14th April 2018 at 7.30pm

Two cocky young gentlemen of fashion come up from London to woo prospective brides in the backwoods of the provinces. Their plans run into trouble : first they are tricked into believing the squire’s country house is an inn and treat the prospective father-in-law as if he were a landlord with ideas above his station; then one of the suitors, a bold womanizer with girls of inferior social status, turns into a quivering wreck when facing a female of equal standing. Fortunately the bride-to-be proves equal to the situation and her acting ability saves the day. Add to the mix a secret affair, a scheming step-mother with a mischief-prone son, missing jewellery, a small army of drunken servants, and what follows is a rumbustious rom-com that has made people roar with laughter since its first performance in 1773. Set over the course of a single night, this fast-paced classic has whip-smart wordplay, mistaken identities a-plenty, knock-about farce, and some of the funniest comic scenes in the repertoire.
